Jaffa Balls you won't want to roll down the aisle.

June 25, 2017

Bliss balls are one of our favourite versatile snacks. Why?

  • easy to make,

  • last up to 7 days in the fridge,

  • the perfect snack to carry in your bag,

  • nutritionally dense,

  • able to be frozen,

  • wonderful popped into smoothies,

  • mind boggling with their endless flavour combinations, and

  • brilliant paired with a piece of fruit for breakfast on the run.

This recipe came about because we love going to the movies and enjoying a snack. Unfortunately, the options at theatres are not only sugar, chemical and fat (the bad kind) laden, they are outrageously expensive.

A box of Jaffa's may seem delicious but for us, the sugar load is not worth the pain of the sugar spike/crash that follows. Just one serve of Jaffas (10 balls) contains 17 grams (4 teaspoons) of sugar.

The World Health Organisation recommends we limit added sugar to 25g (6 teaspoons of sugar) per day in an effort to curb the growing crisis that, for the first time in history, non-communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and coronary issues have overtaken communicable diseases in terms of death. That is, we are now dying more from preventable disease than virus and infection.

Our Jaffa Bliss Balls contain all the joy of a chocolatey orange flavour but they are less than ½ a teaspoon of sugar each, contain good fats, quality protein and fibre and a heap of good-for-you nutrients such as magnesium and iron (cocoa), vitamin C (fresh orange), Vitamin D (sunflower seeds) and zinc (pumpkin seeds).

They also work perfectly for batch cooking and being prepared for the week ahead. We recommend placing the balls into two airtight containers. One for the fridge and one for the freezer. Then you have an easy, good-for-you snack the next time you go to the movies.

Though, we don’t recommend rolling them down the aisle!

Jaffa Bliss Balls (FGR Style)

1 cup almond meal
½ cup good quality protein powder (vanilla or chocolate)
½ cup raw cocoa powder
½ cup desiccated coconut, extra for rolling balls in
¼ cup sunflower seeds
¼ cup pumpkin seeds
¼ cup cocoa nibs
1 tablespoon chia seeds
Zest of 1 orange
Juice of ½ orange
2 tablespoons coconut oil (melted)
8-10 drops Doterra Wild Orange oil*

In a blender, blitz desiccated coconut, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds and cocoa nibs to 5 to 10 seconds. Add almond meal, protein powder and cocoa powder. Blitz for 5-10 seconds to mix. Add orange oil to melted coconut oil and add to dry mix. Add orange juice and zest. Blitz on short bursts until mixture starts to bond together.

Place the mixture into a bowl and the extra desiccated coconut on a dinner plate. Roll into balls (makes 16-20 depending on size) and roll into coconut.

*Doterra Wild Orange essential oil. This amazing oil is the secret to creating the sweet aromatic orange flavour to our Jaffa Bliss Balls and can be used as a culinary oil for cooking. A note of warning though, not all essential oils can be ingested.
